Persons, Policies, Politics & Preference

Dr. Alexander Kurian

My voting preference is NOT based on a person's character. He may be boastful, arrogant, crude and boorish. That is a heart issue; I cannot help it, and laws cannot fix it. I reject such character. This is not something that can be legislated. He is accountable to God for his personal character, attitude and actions. But when I vote my concern as a faithful citizen, who is also a Christian, is in relation to things that can be legislated for the spiritual, moral, social and economic blessing of the country; laws and policies a politician/ candidate will make or support that will affect the moral and social stability of my country. Character is important, but Political policies are more important than personal character in relation to my voting preference. To me, this is a fundamental principle. Policies and laws that determine the moral fabric of our society is more important to me as a born-again Christian. In an election, voting for a certain kind of person is not the criterion for me. Good policies and bad character is preferential to me in a national election. You will never find a political leader without character flaws. If your preference is good character, you will NEVER get it; you will only get bad policies and bad character. That will not be my preference. In my voting preference, I also consider the importance of the court & the judicial system; the appointees to various offices who can influence a positive, moral outlook on issues. I believe "righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." I will not give my vote for the deliberate encouragement of sin and sinful policies. Finally, I cast my vote believing in God's sovereignty, trusting, resting and delighting in it.
