How Should We Vote?
Dr. Alexander Kurian
This election year will bring us to the intersection of Faith & Politics. The following reflection is my own personal conviction as a Christian. I hope and pray that it may shed some light on your voting path.
1. My priority is NOT politics, but the Gospel, but I have some civic duty which cannot be ignored.
2. In a fallen world, I may not be able to find candidates of good and godly character, especially among the "politicians." Perfect candidates are unavailable.
3. As a Christian I am committed to a worldview that defines things in moral terms. So when I vote, more than the "person", it is the "platform" that matters to me. I will seriously evaluate the moral values and ideologies of the platform/party. As a Christian that is my moral obligation. So I will vote for policies that will uphold righteousness (at least in an imperfect sense), morality, things that honor God, agendas that fits the biblical standard, things that will protect people and the society from evil. That means, I cannot be sympathetic or supportive of transgender - LGBT- same-sex marriage issues which are completely against God's created order for humanity, policies that promote & sanction abortion (which is equivalent to murder) lawlessness & anarchy, policies that will undermine the safety, stability and security of our nation etc.
4. It is our faith that decides our worldview, action, choices, politics and voting. Our faith matters, because we are called "to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."
5.Whatever be the outcome, I will not worry. I am consoled and encouraged by the truth of God's Sovereignty. Whoever comes to power cannot shake God's Kingdom agenda or thwart His divine purpose. They will ultimately fulfill His plan. "For He removes Kings and and raises up Kings.... The Most High rules in the Kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will."
